Mowing starts with the grass that is actually growing on the property. Turf species, current height, season, shade and heat stress all affect the right cutting height. Removing too much at once can scalp high spots and leave the lawn less able to handle a hot week, so an overgrown lawn may need to be lowered gradually.

Grass type matters
Cool-season and warm-season lawns grow on different calendars
Tall fescue and other cool-season grasses are most active in the milder parts of spring and fall. Bermudagrass, St. Augustine, kikuyugrass and other warm-season turf grow most strongly during warmer months and may slow or lose color in winter. The same yard can even contain more than one type after years of patching and natural spread.
Those differences affect both height and frequency. A low cut that suits actively growing bermudagrass may expose or weaken a fescue lawn, especially near reflected heat. In shade, leaving more leaf surface can help grass use limited light. We favor a healthy, repeatable cut over forcing every property into one visual standard.
Mowing frequency
Let the growth rate set the rhythm
University of California guidance recommends removing no more than about one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Weekly service is often useful during vigorous spring or summer growth. Biweekly service can fit slower growth, lower irrigation or a lawn entering seasonal dormancy.
Fertilizer, weather and watering can temporarily speed up growth. If the lawn becomes too tall between visits, the safest answer may be an extra cut or a gradual reduction rather than one severe pass. Wet turf may also require rescheduling because mower traffic can create ruts, tearing and compacted tracks.

- Pets remain indoors or securely separated from the work area.
- The yard is free of heavy brush, debris and extensive weeds.
- Hidden irrigation, wires and fragile edging are disclosed or marked.
When the flat price may not apply
Grass over eight inches, pet waste, heavy weeds, debris, unsafe conditions, locked gates or other obstacles may require a higher price, rescheduling or cancellation at Burbank Lawn Care’s discretion. Any additional charge will be explained before extra work begins.
